The Central Cascades Winter Recreation Council is comprised of volunteers from local area nordic ski clubs as well as winter recreation enthusiasts. We meet at 6:30 p.m. at different locations the First Tuesday of the month, during the winter months.
1/03/2012 6:30 p.m. -
Newport Way Library - The main focus of this meeting will be to discuss the current shared use (between Dog Sledders, Ski Jourers, Cross Country Skiiers, Track Skiiers, Backcountry Skiiers, and Snowshoers) of the Iron Horse trail between Lost Lake Road and Stampede Pass Rd. The Washington State Winter Recreation Program and Washington State Parks will be present to listen to the discussion and of course answers questions on this topic.

501 3 c (Non-Profit) – The CCWRC has had some discussions over the last few meetings regarding the possible creation of a 501 3 c. Our recent survey has also showed overwhelmingly support for the creation of a 501 3 c from the general public. Within the survey, there were a few people that wanted to know more and a few people that were strongly opposed to the idea.
Several months ago Tim Foss indicated that locally we may need to come up with money in order to maintain some of the ski trails that are on USFS land. This was timely because that was about the time some discussions were occurring about the possibility of forming a 501 3 c. Additionally, Wayne McLaughlin
? (Winter Recreation Program) has verbally supported the idea of a 501 3 C, and this was re-iterated again in a recent meeting with him and Pamela McConkey
?. Additionally, in an email dialogue that occurred over the weekend with Tim Schmidt (Lake Easton State Park), it was evident that he supports the idea of a 501 3 c.
As a result I am forming a committee to explore this option more closely. Several people have already expressed interest, and at this time I believe it is prudent to formally explore this option. If you have a desire to be involved in this process, please send a letter of interest to winter.recreation at gmail.com. This is an open process and you need not be a currently active member of the CCWRC to be involved in exploring this idea.
Discussion about the idea of forming a 501 3 c have been with the following guiding principles in mind:
1. Expand our partnership with the Winter Rec Program, Washington State Parks, USFS, and other partners to provide additional resources for the continued success of the Washington State Parks Winter Rec Program.
2. Advocate and support existing opportunities for all non-motorized recreation in the I-90 corridor. Create new opportunities where appropriate.
3. Work collaboratively with all organizations and user groups with a goal of seamless integration of the various uses (including snowmobile recreation).
While these principles are not set in stone and may be modified or expanded as identified by all the various stakeholders, it should be noted that these are the principles that will guide us.
If you believe in these principles, then please send your letter of interest, no later than
June 21, 2011. Your lett should be sent to winter.recreation at gmail.com.
Whether or not you believe in these principles, it is important to realize that we must continue to work together co-operatively for the future of (NON motorized) Winter Recreation.

- PUBLIC INPUT SOUGHT!: The Okanogan Wenatchee National Forest is preparing its Forest Plan. Additionally, we are trying to consolidate our trail inventories, and proposed ideas. Please review our CURRENT TRAIL INVENTORY. In addition to current and proposed trails and other amenities, we are compiling historical uses as well. There have been a number of trails that have been lost, but never replaced. This is a draft document, and we plan to update after Christmas. If you have any input, please email Karen Behm, klbehm AT comcast.net
Here is a copy of our
DRAFT COMMENTS, including an
APPENDIX to the Forest Service. If you have any input, please email Chris Caviezel, nordic.chris AT gmail.com.
These documents will be discussed at our February Meeting (and possibly March) for final approval to be sent to the USFS
